Summary Landscaping/Groundskeeper - Public Grounds & Cemeteries (Seasonal) Recreation & Parks Department
Salary: $14.99 Hourly
FLSA Position Class: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7 AM-3:30 PM

Job Overview Responsible for a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
- Performs a variety of heavy manual work relating to repair, maintenance, and/or construction of city's infrastructure.
- Operates front end deck mowers, turf tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, jack hammers, chain saws, weed eaters, and other power equipment.
- Assists in ground and building maintenance.
- Operates, maintains, and repairs departmental equipment.
- Assists supervisors in planning and organizing work.
- Organizes and sets up daily work assignments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements Education and/or Experience - Six (6) months experience in general landscaping and grounds maintenance work
Requirements - Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, or any valid driver's license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Thorough knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work.
- Thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventative maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to Interact with the public in a professional manner.
- Ability to follow all safety policies and procedures.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and to convey detailed or important instructions to others; hearing is required to respond to spoken words, to receive and understand information, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/or within arm's length, operation of machines, tools, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, poor ventilation, cutting fluids, oils, and hazards including work around operating machinery, aircraft, uneven surfaces, and narrow or confined spaces. Employees may be required to wear a respirator or mask during certain conditions.
