Job Description

The Senior Center Assistant will support the Senior Center Director with providing services funded through the Older Americans Act, including, but not limited to, nutritional programs, evidence-based exercise programs, transportation services, information and assistance, and outreach. The Senior Center Director Assistant will routinely help with cleaning, planning activities, conducting weekly phone calls, assessment/reassessment paperwork, and transportation services. The Senior Center Assistant must maintain confidentiality of all participants.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Congregate Meals: Involves assisting with serving meals at the senior center site. This duty may consist of:

  • Assist with unloading congregate food from van.
  • Check, document, and report food temperatures.
  • Check, document, and report refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
  • Clean carriers/coolers.
  • Ensure proper food handling procedures are followed; and
  • Wash and put away dishes and flatware.


Activities: Involves assisting with the planning and coordinating activities for seniors, participating in evidence-based trainings, obtaining required certifications, promoting activities at the senior center site. This duty may consist of:

  • Coordinate and implement evidence-based exercise programs.
  • Ensure a safe environment is provided during activities.
  • Lead activities in a group setting.
  • Monitor participants during activities.
  • Obtain certification(s) for evidence-based exercise programs.
  • Participate in required activity and evidence-based trainings.
  • Plan and coordinate activities best-suited for participants.
  • Promote activities; and
  • Schedule activities.


Senior Center Administration: Involves answering and directing telephone calls, attending trainings, entering data in the state database system and conducting assessments and reassessments on congregate and home delivered meal participants. This duty may consist of:

  • Address participant comments/complaints in a timely and professional manner.
  • Adhere to applicable policies and regulations.
  • Answer and direct telephone calls.
  • Assist participants with various needs.
  • Attend trainings.
  • Conduct assessments on new congregate and home delivered meal participants.
  • Conduct annual reassessments on congregate and home delivered meal participants.
  • Contact home delivered meal participants on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Count donations.
  • Coordinate and execute fundraising events.
  • Enter units in the state database system (SAMS).
  • Provide participants with information and resources.
  • Scan and file applicable daily, weekly, and monthly forms.
  • Submit required daily, weekly, and monthly forms to the appropriate recipient(s); and
  • Supervise and train volunteers.


Transportation: Involves transporting seniors to and from the senior center, as well as other locations (i.e., bank, pharmacy, post office, and grocery store), transport food to the senior center for congregate meals, and deliver meals to home delivered meal participants while maintaining confidential participant records. This duty may consist of:

  • Conduct routine inspections on senior center vehicle(s) and report any issues.
  • Complete and submit vehicle and transportation logs.
  • Deliver meals to the senior center site and home delivered meal participants.
  • Ensure the senior center vehicle remains clean and operable.
  • Utilize a company-issued fleet card for senior center vehicle-related gas purchases.
  • Submit gas receipts; and
  • Transport seniors to various locations.


Other Duties: Involves any other tasks and assistance needed to support the senior center and/or nutrition program within the Gateway region.

Physical Requirements:

Sit for extended periods of time; stand and walk for extended periods of time; reach, stoop, crouch, bend, and work in cramped spaces; ascend/descend ladders; ability to lift and carry approximately 60 pounds; fine motor skills; operate a vehicle.

Sensory Requirements: Sight; Hearing; Speaking.

Working Conditions:

Indoor office conditions; outdoor conditions during various weather conditions and on various terrains; possible wildlife/animal encounters during home meal deliveries.

Tools, Equipment, and Vehicle Use:

Standard office equipment (computers, printers, scanners, phones, etc.); industrial kitchen equipment; and personal vehicle/fleet vehicle(s)/large van(s).

This is a 30-hour-per-week position. The position is based at the Montgomery County Senior Center, located at 108 East Locust Street, Mount Sterling, KY 40353. Pay is $13.00 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED or higher.
  • Certification and Trainings: Valid Driver’s License required. Food Manager’s License and CPR/First Aid Certification must be acquired and maintained after hiring. Employees will be expected to attend professional development trainings related to programs and services provided through senior center sites.
  • Experience: Entry Level Position. One (1) year of related experience and/or related internship required; two (2) years of related experience and/or related internship preferred.
