Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees and supervises staff and participates in work involving examining, identifying, and evaluating suspected evidence they may include latent prints, blood, semen, hair, fibers, and other physical evidence.
  • Oversees and participates in conducting field investigations at scenes of crimes and other pertinent locations to obtain and transfer relevant physical evidence to the crime laboratory.
  • Oversees the scheduling and prioritizing of work assignments and caseloads; monitors case submissions and turnaround times ensuring cases are processed in an accurate, complete and timely manner; assists with complex/problem situation, and provides technical expertise.
  • Developing, approving, and maintaining unit specific training programs; conducting, monitoring, and documenting training progress of all unit personnel; documenting authorization for unit personnel to conduct specific analyses/functions upon completion of competency testing.
  • Prepares highly detailed, technical/scientific written reports on findings in order to document scientific analyses and results; presents detailed reports.
  • Generating, reviewing/updating, and approving unit standard operating procedures, and ensuring compliance by personnel under their supervision.
  • Serving as the site manager/administrator for the AZABFIS remote access terminal.
  • Overseeing the professional development of assigned personnel, developing in-service training, and administering competency and proficiency tests.
  • Communicates with officers and attorneys, attends pre-trial conferences, prepares exhibits for courtroom use, and provides expert testimony in courts throughout Arizona to present forensic evidence and review expert testimony and scientific examination results.
  • Researching, developing, and implementing new laboratory and field methods and equipment for utilization in the section.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; approves and/or initiates orders for new/replacement materials.
  • Maintain quality assurance standards and ensuring safe working conditions in accordance with OSHA and other safety regulations and procedures.

  • Directing caseload and turnaround time.
  • Preparing and maintaining laboratory records and reference files.
  • Performing technical and administrative review of case reports.
  • The Forensic Services Supervisor is responsible for providing expert testimony in court, as well as accompanying other Forensic Services personnel to court in order to review and formally critique their expert witness testimony presentations.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Gilbert Police Department and other crime labs and forensic services units.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Candidates for the Forensic Services Supervisor must possess:
  • A Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Forensic Science (Criminalistics); Biology; Biochemistry; Chemistry; or a closely related field of study.
  • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience performing crime scene processing, latent print comparisons, or working as a Criminalist or Forensic Scientist in a laboratory actively engaged in the forensic sciences preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by date of hire.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain an Arizona Automated Fingerprint Identification System certification within 12 months.
  • Must be court qualified as an expert witness.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Because of the confidential, sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph is required.
